Setting up and using the Welsh keyboard driver
in Macintosh OSX

T
he Welsh keyboard must firstly be installed and then enabled

1.    Go to the Apple menu and open System Preferences.

2.    Select the Language and Region icon on the first row of the Systems Preferences panel.

 

  • Select the Language and Region icon on the top row of the System Preferences panel.


3. Click the + sign to display the language options available


 
 
  • Click the + sign to display the language options available

4. Scroll down the displayed list of languages and click to activate the Cymraeg keyboard

 
 
  • Scroll down and click to activate the Cymraeg keyboard

5. Click Add to select the Cymraeg keyboard

 
 
  • Click Add to select the Cymraeg keyboard;
    the Welsh keyboard will now be added to the keyboard options available

6. With Welsh included in the language versions available, you can turn on the Welsh keyboard by selecting Welsh from the options which drop down when the mouse pointer moves over the flag icon displayed in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

 
 
  • Select the Welsh Dargon icon from the drop-down options displayed by moving the mouse pointer over the flag icon in the top right hand corner of the screen.

7. You will now be able to select the Welsh accented characters from the keyboard

 
 
  • Select the Welsh Dargon icon from the drop-down options displayed by moving the mouse pointer over the flag icon in the top right hand corner of the screen.

Obtaining the Welsh accented characters on the Mac

Once the Welsh keyboard is selected, the four possible accents can be obtained for each of the vowels a,e,i,o,u,w,y for use in any application, such as a Word processor by holding down the vowel key until the accented possibilities are displayed, then clicking on the chosen accented letter with the mouse:

The commonest accent in Welsh is the to bach ie. the circumflex which can occur on any of the vowels

 
 
  • Press down the Alt key and tap the appropriate vowel; a,e,o,u,w,y to give â,ê,î,ô,û,ŵ,ŷ, the lower case letters.
  • To obtain accented capitals, hold down the Shift key or  the Caps lock keywith the Alt key then type the vowel.


The OSX keyboard driver for Welsh works with the Unicode character sets, so the full range of Welsh accented characters may not be present in older fonts.



Earlier releases of the Macintosh operating system.

1.    Go to the Apple menu and open Systems Preferences.
2.    Select the International icon on the first row of the Systems Preferences panel.

3. Select the Input Menu

 Scroll down and click to activate the Cymraeg keyboard

To select the Welsh keyboard in an application

1. 
Open a software application such as a word processor, spreadsheet or any other application in which you need to enter text.

2.
On the upper right portion of the screen, click on the  flag icon (flag ) and use the dropdown menu to select the Welsh keyboard.
